Akal Takhat gets legal view on hanging of Balwant Singh Rajoana in Beant Singh assassination case

21.3.2012 (UNI) Noted Supreme Court lawyer H S Phoolka has apprised Akal Takht chief Gurbachan Singh about the legal position on the hanging of Balwant Singh Rajoana, sentenced to death in the Beant Singh assassination case.
The Session court of Chandigarh has issued death warrants for hanging Balwant Singh in the Central Jail, Patiala on March 31.
'I have already apprised Jathedar Gurbachan Singh about the legal position on the hanging of Balwant Singh Rajoana,' Mr Phoolka told UNI over phone.
Rajoana is in Patiala Central Jail since November 2010.
'Anyone can file the mercy petition with the President of India if convict himself has refused to adopt legal path to save himself from the gallows,' the lawyer said.
Akal Takhat has sought suggestions till March 23 in a bid to save Rajoana.
Beant Singh was killed on August 31, 1995, in which Rajoana was the back-up bomber, at Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh.
